Nambu Senbei

Nanbu Senbei is a traditional Japanese cracker from the northern Tohoku region, especially Iwate Prefecture.
It’s typically made from simple ingredients like wheat flour, salt, and water, then baked until crisp. The texture is firm and crunchy, and the flavor is mild and rustic — a taste that feels very “old‑Japan.”
There are many variations, including ones with roasted peanuts, black sesame, pumpkin seeds, or even seaweed. The peanut version is especially popular and has a nostalgic, comforting flavor.
Nanbu senbei is often enjoyed as a snack with tea, and in some areas it’s even used in savory dishes like senbei‑jiru, a local soup where pieces of the cracker are added to absorb the broth.

This one is seriously tasty.

I absolutely love snacks made with a Nanbu‑senbei base. They’re one of my all‑time favorites.

I bought it so I could write about it here, since it’s one of my favorites — and yes, I happily finished every last bite.

This snack is from Co‑op Deli. Besides the main catalog, it sometimes appears in the “Gurume‑Meguri” section as well. There’s also a larger version of まめごろうMamegorō, but I’m definitely on the “small size” team. Each piece is roughly 50 kcal, which makes calorie control surprisingly easy.

To put it simply — it’s a peanut cookie.

The cookie base is very similar to Nanbu senbei, with a calm, egg‑rich flavor. The butter adds a nice depth, giving it a slightly Western touch, yet it still feels more Japanese than a typical cookie or galette. That balance pairs perfectly with the peanuts.

Yes, exactly — “rakkasei”落花生 feels more fitting than just saying “peanuts”ピーナッツ

The rich flavor created by Japanese butter and roasted rakkasei (peanuts) pairs beautifully with tea. In the colder months, it’s especially comforting with a warm cup of hojicha. And since it’s packed with peanuts, it even feels a little nutritious — which is a nice bonus!

As for the larger version of Mamegorō, you can actually order it online through Rakuten. Imagine handing out Nanbu‑senbei–style peanut cookies on Halloween — no one else would have the same treat. It would definitely stand out!

There’s even a pumpkin‑seed version!
I found it — the ultimate Halloween giveaway snack that absolutely no one else will have.
